Gelid

Today’s word is gelid which is an adjective that means extremely cold; icy.

As she entered the room, a hush fell over the lively conversations and she felt the temperature in the room drop from tropical to gelid. She anticipated this, because although she was invited, her presence probably wasn’t expected. She had been conflicted when she considered whether to attend, but in the end, she felt it was necessary that she make an appearance, although underneath her feelings hadn’t changed. She still felt the decision was wrong, but she also did not want to be shut out of all future family events, so she swallowed her pride and decided to make the best of it. Someday they would all agree she had been right, but for now, she would go along with the group’s consensus and offer her congratulations to the happy couple.
