Cajole

The word of today is cajole which is a transitive verb which means to persuade with flattery, repeated appeals or soothing words; to coax.

She tried to lose him on their way home, to cajole him into going over to his friend’s house or playing with his trucks in the backyard. She didn’t want him to follow her to the basement, and she was praying that her mother wasn’t using the washing machine and doing laundry today. She wanted to see what was inside the bag, but she didn’t want an audience; she wanted to inventory the content’s of her discovery alone.

But Jake suspected something was going on, since she seemed to be in such a hurry, and when she entered the entryway door to the stairwell of their home, he wanted to see why she had turned right, heading down the stairs into the cellar, instead of left, and up into the kitchen.

“You go upstairs and I’ll be there in a minute,” she turned and whispered, when he started following right behind her.

Now he really knew she was up to something, because she was trying to be so quiet, and he could hear his mother up above talking in the kitchen to one of the neighbor ladies who must have stopped over for a visit; Jake knew he had all the leverage because his sister didn’t want their mother to know she was home, so he stayed close on her heels.
