Presage

Today’s word is presage, which can be used as a noun, transitive verb or intransitive verb.

Noun:

1. An indication or warning of a future event; an omen.

2. A feeling or intuition of what the future holds.

3. Prophetic significance.

Transitive verb:

1. To indicate or warn of beforehand; to foreshadow.

2. To have a presentiment of.

3. To predict; to foretell.

Intransitive verb:

1. To make or utter a prediction.

She went down the three steps into the cellar, carefully avoiding the spot that squeaked. Jake, unfortunately,  did not know they were in undercover mode, and stepped on the place she had so carefully avoided. This was typical of his sense of stealth, which was nonexistent, and by allowing him to follow her, she had a presage that eventually he would be blabbering nonstop to their mother about her secret. But her overwhelming curiousity over the object in her pocket stripped her of the ability to focus on the future and devise a strategy to shake him.  When his weight shifted and the wooden stair played it’s long note of warning, she turned and gave him a hard stare and then looked up into the wooden joists of the cellar as if seeing into the kitchen up above. She listened a few mintues, but noticed no pause in the conversation between their mother and the neighbor, and so, for now, the coast was clear
