Today’s word is vicissitude which is a noun which means:
1. Regular change or succession from one thing to another; alternation; mutual succession; interchange.
2. Irregular change; revolution; mutation.
3. A change in condition or fortune; an instance of mutability in life or nature (especially successive alternation from one condition to another).

After a few minutes she decided it was safe to move again.
“If you have to follow me, be quiet,” she whispered.
She towered over him and pierced him with a long, hard look, that was meant to warn him she would knock him flat if he didn’t do as she said. After he rapidly nodded his assent, she turned and walked across the earthen floor of the open, wall-less cellar, towards the opposite side of the house, near the washer and dryer and her father’s old workbench. She didn’t dare to pull the chained cord attached to the sixty watt bulb that was responsible for illuminating this side of the basement, but since it was midafternoon, she could see well enough with the daylight from the half windows that lined the upper part of the wall. Her brother watched her closely, fascinated by how she was acting and what it would mean to him; it definitely seemed as if something had happened on their walk home that had caused a change in the vicissitude of their otherwise boring day.
