Series: The Package, part 8
~~~~~
The old man stopped his retreat and came back to the door’s window to look closer at them, with a confused expression and still not smiling. She began to wonder if she made the right decision by showing him the box, but she was uncertain about what to do if he closed the door without taking it. Her mother had sent her and Luke on their bikes to see the man after telephoning the printed number written in shaky pencil on the outside of the container. The owner was identified as Mr. Peck and his address was one they were familiar with since they rode their bike past it everyday, one block over from their house; familiar stomping grounds. He had asked on the phone if the children could return it and their mother had agreed, but she had sternly warned them before they left not to go inside the house, even if Mr. Peck asked, and they were not to ask for any money for making the return. If Mr. Peck wanted to give them something for being honest, he would offer it of his own accord, she said.
