Draconian

Today’s word is Draconian which means:

1. Of, pertaining to, or characteristic of Draco or his code of laws, or

2. (often lowercase) rigorous; unusually severe or cruel.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that we are the ones that the majority despises. That thought, whenever it pops into my head, always gives me a slight jolt of surprise, followed by sadness and hurt. How could I have forgotten, yet again, that under the draconian constitutional restrictions in most of the states in our country, our loving each other cannot be legally recognized and, in fact, as far as the most respected religious groups are concerned, our life together is just another example of the sinful and immoral activities that contribute to the ongoing downfall of our society.

My mood drops further when I remember that many of the self-riotous people that hold these particular beliefs would view hurting someone “like them” not as bad, or even as much of a sin, in their god’s view, as hurting someone in their “normal” majority because, the theory goes, they bring it upon themselves, by thinking “that way” or acting “that way” or existing as a human “that way”.

And then I remember “that way” describes me and my partner, when we live together, take care of one another, love each other, and become each other’s family.

“That way” is no one’s business but ours, and no better or worse than theirs, but because we will always be the minority, in a country that only seems to know how to speak in politically correct sentences and yet secretly loathes any perceived threat to the homogeneous similarities of their majority, we will always be considered the abnormal heretics that need to be saved.
